Region information
Belgium, holiday destinationBelgium, which is located at the heart of Europe, between Germany, the Netherlands, Luxembourg, England and France, is a Mecca for holiday-makers. Whether you are interested in a sports holiday by the seaside, a cultural city break or open air activities in the Ardennes, Belgium has all the ingredients for a successful holiday.
Belgium is also famous for its museums, paintings and numerous works of art.
The Kingdom is divided into 3 distinct linguistic zones: a Dutch-speaking zone in the north, a French speaking zone in the South and a small minority German-speaking zone in the east.
Brussels is a bilingual zone, where the population speaks both French and Dutch fluently. A large part of the populations also speaks English.
For gourmets
When it comes to gastronomy, Belgium has no reason to be jealous of France. Visitors will discover with pleasure the diversity and delicacy of Belgian cuisine. Its specialities include: the not-to-be-missed mussels and chips, its famous waterzooï, a type of chicken stew, plus delicious wild game dishes in the autumn,...
Belgium is rightly famous for its unbeatable chips, served with a variety of sauces. Buy them from typical chip vans (« Friteries ») at numerous roadside sites and in villages.
As regards Belgian chocolate, its reputation is second to none throughout the world.
Finally, no list of Belgian gastronomy would be complete if we did not mention the hundreds of Belgian beers to be enjoyed, as well as the huge choice of cheeses to be found in Belgium.
Driving
Belgium has a vast network of motorways and secondary roads. Most motorways are lit at night. In built-up areas and villages, the speed limit is 30 to 70 km an hour, while the limit is 70 to 90 km an hour on secondary roads and 120 km an hour on motorways.
In addition, it is illegal to use a hand-held mobile phone when driving. Finally, seat belts must be worn in the front and rear of the vehicle.
